Benzyl chloride,
chloromethylbenzene, a powerful lachrymator is a clear liquid; melts
at -39 C; boils at 179 C.
Applications:
alpha-Chlorinated toluenes are used in the end applications of perfumery,
dyes, pharmaceuticals, synthetic resins, photographic chemicals, warfare
chemicals, penicillins, quaternary ammonium compounds, plasticizer and
esters. Benzyl Chloride is widely used as an intermediate for manufacturing
organic compounds including benzyl alcohol, benzyl cyanide and other benzyl
derivative compounds.
